A stunning Christmas trifle made with layers of cake, custard, fruit, and whipped cream. Make-ahead and endlessly customizable.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings

Ingredients

1. Cake Layer

  • 1 pound cake (about 12 oz), cut into cubes
  • You can use store-bought pound cake, angel food cake, or sponge cake. Ladyfingers or genoise are great too.
  •  Tip: If using a plain sponge, lightly toast the cubes for extra structure.
  •
  • ½ cup sherry, fruit juice, or orange liqueur (optional)
  • Traditional trifles use sherry, but orange juice, cranberry juice, or limoncello work well. Skip for a kid-friendly version.
  •   Soak the cake cubes lightly, don’t drench them just enough to soften and flavor.

2. Fruit Layer

  • 1½ cups berry compote, jam, or stewed fruit
  • Use raspberry jam, cherry compote, or a mixed berry blend. Avoid watery fruits.
  •  For a quick compote: simmer frozen berries with a little sugar until thickened.
  • 1 cup fresh berries (optional, for layering and topping)
  • Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, or blackberries.
  •  Use firm, not overripe, fruit so it holds its shape between layers.

3. Custard Layer

  • 2 cups vanilla custard
  • Homemade or store-bought. Should be thick, cool, and pourable.
  •  See the homemade version provided above. If using boxed pudding, chill fully before layering.

4. Cream Layer

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • Chilled. Whip to soft peaks for airy texture.
  •  Optional: Add 2 tablespoons powdered sugar + 1 tsp vanilla for lightly sweetened cream.
  • 5. Toppings (Pick one or combine)
  • ¼ cup flaked almonds, toasted
  • Adds crunch and a nutty finish.
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate curls or shavings
  • Use dark, milk, or white chocolate. Use a vegetable peeler on a chocolate bar for easy curls.
  • 6–8 small amaretti cookies, crushed
  • For a classic British texture and almond flavor twist.
  • Festive sprinkles or mint leaves (optional garnish)
  • Adds holiday charm. Keep it minimal for a grown-up look or fun for kids.

Instructions

  1. Cut the pound cake into cubes. Lightly soak with sherry or juice if using.
  2. Place a layer of cake in the bottom of a trifle bowl.
  3. Add a layer of berry compote or jam.
  4. Add a layer of custard and spread evenly.
  5. Repeat the layers as desired, ending with custard.
  6. Whip the cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
  7. Spoon or pipe whipped cream on top of the trifle.
  8. Garnish with almonds, chocolate curls, crushed cookies, or sprinkles.
  9. Chill for at least 4 hours or overnight before serving.

Notes

  • For a kid-friendly version, skip the alcohol and use fruit juice.
  • Add mascarpone or flavored cream for a richer topping.
  • Layer in individual glasses or jars for a portable version.
  • Use leftovers like brownies or gingerbread for creative twists.
