This 7 spice cheese steak is a bold twist on the classic cheesesteak, featuring thinly sliced beef cooked with warm Middle Eastern spices, caramelized onions, and melted cheese inside a toasted roll. It’s a flavorful sandwich that comes together quickly and makes a satisfying weeknight dinner.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ribeye steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon 7 spice seasoning (baharat)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or mozzarella)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the steak
Slice the steak very thin. If needed, place the steak in the freezer for 15–20 minutes to make slicing easier.
  2. Cook the vegetables
Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and bell peppers and cook until softened and lightly caramelized. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  3. Cook the steak
Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the sliced steak to the skillet and cook quickly while breaking it apart with a spatula.
  4. Add seasoning
Sprinkle the 7 spice seasoning over the beef and mix well so the meat is evenly coated.
  5. Combine and melt cheese
Return the onions and peppers to the pan and mix with the steak. Place cheese slices on top and allow them to melt.
  6. Assemble the sandwiches
Lightly toast the hoagie rolls, then fill them with the hot steak mixture. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Freeze the steak briefly before slicing for thinner pieces.
  • Cook steak in batches if necessary to keep the pan hot.
  • Add mushrooms or chili flakes for extra flavor variations.
